Moana Birthday Party!

Writer's picture: Anita Persaud Anita Persaud

To help escape some of the freezing cold weather we've been having this winter, Moana was the perfect theme for my niece's birthday party. What better way to feel like you're on a tropical island, than filling the house with flowers, beach back drops, and Moana!

Let's begin like we usually do, with the entrance. This was set up by the front door, so it was the first thing guests saw. We found the beach scene back drop from the party store, as well as the candy and candy containers. We stuck with the colors blue, purple, and pink for Moana. We went with the brightest versions of these colors that we could find. The Gift bags with Moana on them were found on Amazon. The letter "E" on the chair was made out of wood, that I found at the craft store. I sprayed it with pink paint, and hot glued loose Hawaiian flowers from leis that I found at the party store. You can also order leis from amazon in different colors and quantities, depending on how many guests you're having.

We love having something fun and festive for the kids to walk through before seeing the rest of the decorations. So we hung up purple, pink, and blue tinsel curtains. I found some at the party store, and ordered some from Amazon. The sign hanging above was made on a white Canvas, and I hot glued card stock paper on to it. The Letters, and leaves were cut out using my Cameo machine.

This is probably one of the best decorations we've made so far for a party. The boat is made out of a long piece of card board from a box left over from Christmas, and spray painted brown, and blue on the bottom to make it look like it is on the water. The raft coming off the side, was made by hot gluing the inside rolls from wrapping paper, or paper towel together, and spray painted. The flag pole was made the same way, and then we cut a triangle out of poster board, and cut the symbol out from the Cameo machine. We put a plastic light blue table cloth as the back drop, and we sprayed it with white, to make it look like the sky. The blue string lights we had left over from Christmas, and it added a special effect. We designed the boat so that kids could get "into" the boat and take pictures! My niece loved it!

Now time to go to the beach! We hung up the beach back drop from the party store, and hung these paper floral streamers we bought on Amazon. The Sign on the fireplace was custom made from Amazon as well. When we hung up the blue tinsel curtains in the foyer, it was too long so I cut some off the bottom. I used these scraps on the fireplace, and strung one of the blue string lights on top to light them up, and make them look like water.

Now it's time to enter Tamatoa's shiny cave! In the movie, Moana and Maui lose Maui's hook, and the heart in the cave. So I decided to make that room into his cave, and have the kids do a scavenger hunt in there.

To make the Tamatoa table, I used a dark purple table cloth, and found a free downloadable template for his teeth on pinterest. For his eyes, I cut circles from purple card stock paper from the craft store, and smaller circles from white and black to create his eyes. I hot glued them on to wooden skewers, and stuck those into two pieces of styrofoam. I added a circular gold tray I bought from the dollar store, and hot glued sea shells on to it, and sprayed it all gold to make his shell on the table. I found the shells at the craft store. The back drop was left over from the Beauty and the Beast party we had done the week before, so we used it in here as well!

In Tamatoa's cave I hid a heart of Te Fiti Gem. I made the gem by buying clear gems from the craft store, and painted on a swirl with green paint. I used the other gems that came in the bag to scatter around the room, to make the hunt a little harder.

In the dining room, we hung a light blue tinsel curtain across the window. As a center we used a Moana pinata, that we found at the party store. I found a Moana party package on amazon, that came with table cloths, plates, utensils, and some hanging decorations. We included the little coconuts from the movie too. I ordered a set of plastic coconuts from Amazon, and glued a face on that I found for free on Pinterest.

Among all the other decorations, I loved this version of Tamatoa. I found the outline of his body for free on Pinterest, and cut it out on purple glitter card stock. I used gold metallic spray paint to spray a plastic plate, and hot glued all the pieces together.

It was fun to disappear from the cold weather outside, and feel like we were on an Island in the sun! For dessert, I made a Moana cake that you can find under the Cakes & Cupcakes tab! Leave a comment if you have any questions!
